Advancing understanding and healing through psychological science & practice.
Psychological science and practice have histories as tools of oppression and othering, from the early dismissals of so-called “hystericals” to ongoing conversion therapies aimed at changing people’s sexual attractions or gender identities and expressions. However, our field has the potential to provide powerful means of liberation, wellness, and resistance. At its core, psychology is the exploration of people’s internal experiences and the ways these are impacted by and in turn impact external experiences. I use such exploration and - when all goes well - understanding of these experiences and their intersections to promote mental health and challenge oppression through scholarship, consultation, education, and psychotherapy.
“I wish that instead of investing in these hierarchies of what’s right and whose wrong, who’s authentic and who’s not, and ranking people according to rigid standards that ignore the diversity in our genders and sexualities, we gave people the freedom and resources to define, determine, and declare who they are.”
-Janet Mock, Redefining Realness
